Training; what and what not to do…

OK, so you’ll hear something different from any fitness fanatic you talk to about training methods; do you do cardio, weights, HIIT, stretch…?

Truth is they’re all important, personally I love them all.

Except cardio.

-You feel winded and red faced BUT it adds value- it’s strengthening your heart and intercostal muscles, meaning lower blood pressure and greater stamina, and who doesn’t want that?

The truth is, you’ll find your kryptonite too.

A lot of women, and I mean A LOT, avoid any form of weight-training, even body weight. They mistakenly believe that lifting weights will result in a boxy male frame.

This could not be further from the truth; weight training builds muscle; muscle requires more energy, even at tick-over, than fat.

Your body at rest, still burns calories- greater muscle mass uses more energy, more energy = greater calorie burn.

So are we now all clear on this?

Second reason weight training is a great training system; providing it’s done correctly, it doesn’t stress the joints in the same way pounding a pavement going running every day will, plus you won’t be winded- warm, but not winded.

Third reason I love weight training is the additional benefits; due to the increase in pressure put on the body during training (mechanical loading) the force going through the muscles and the bones, this causes an increase in bone density.

This is a perfectly natural bodily response to the external “stressor”; the body protects itself. Ok, this probably isn’t what you automatically think of when weight-training but its worth noting that bone density starts to deteriorate as you get older and by regularly incorporating weight training you can reduce your susceptibility to osteoporosis!

So when it comes to training the only thing you SHOULDN’T be doing is ruling anything out, all forms of exercise have benefit and to get the most out of your workouts and to create the body you’ve always wanted you need to be incorporating all aspects into your weekly training.

And remember, a good trainer will help you find the workout that’s right and balanced for you as our overarching goal is to help you achieve yours.
